Impound Insurance - Frequently asked questions
If your vehicle is impounded for whatever reason, you need a specialist type of insurance for the police to allow you to drive it out. This is because your standard insurance will not cover an impounded vehicle. Policywise specialise in this very specific type of insurance and can act quickly to allow you to retrieve your vehicle with the minimum of fuss and help take a little of the stress out of an unpleasant situation.
If you’ve not been in this unfortunate situation before, you’ll naturally have a few questions about this process - below are some of the most common things we get asked:
Can I take out a policy?
To take out a policy for an impounded vehicle you need to be the owner and registered keeper of that vehicle. We offer policies for people over the age of 21 with a valid Provisional or Full UK Licence, and EU and international licences held for less than 12 months.
I have a provisional licence, can I still drive the vehicle out of the impound?
Yes – as long as you have someone with a full UK licence sat next to you and they are either over the age of 30 or have been driving for at least 5 years.
Can I have a named driver on an impounded car insurance policy?
Unfortunately it is not possible to take out an impound insurance policy for anyone other than the owner and registered keeper of the vehicle.
What’s the minimum number of days of insurance?
We are often asked for only a day’s insurance, but we can only offer policies for 30 days. This is because a majority of impounds will only accept insurance that covers a minimum of 30 days or more.
What type of cover can I have?
All of our impound policies are Third Party only.
What documents are needed to get an impounded car released?
Once you have the correct impounded car insurance in place, there is a checklist of documents you need to take to the impound with you to release your vehicle. This includes:
1. Driving licence
2. Impounded car insurance documents
3. Proof of ownership
Can I get my vehicle released today?
As long as we have all the correct information, we can usually get a vehicle released the same day once we have payment for your policy.
